I don't understand what these people are griping about! I have been in there several times in the past few years, and recently for brunch- which inspired me to finally get around to composing a review. Now that I see that there are a lot of needy whiners out there I am even more inspired to say something positive. The service has always been reliable and efficient (our server refilled our sodas w/o us having to ask, just before they were low). Our brunch was SO GOOD! The BEST Hollandaise to be had! Our server...an attractive tall gal with reddish hair, told us that the chef makes the Hollandaise, and all of their other sauces/dressing, from scratch.
Also, if the mood strikes you, their deserts are also worth a try! Esp if they have any as a special that day. (eclair)Yum! Check your needyness at the door and I think you might find you like the place!

Been going to happy hour for year's at the Boulder Cafe. Over the past few year's i have seen a sharp decline in overall business and quality. I was in last week, the server was rude, the service was slow, and the food was about average. As i walked by a group of employee's standing there doing nothing (we waited ten minutes for WATER!) one employee stank of marijuana, the bartender's were drinking alchol behind the bar yet, we waited 10 minutes for water and our drinks arrived 9 minutes after that. I can honestly say i will never be back! With other great hh's in the area(the med, brasserie 1010, even walnut brewery has a half off happy hour) you people at the Boulder Cafe have ruined a great thing. I remember when it was alot of fun.

Filthy outdoor tables - decent food

I just finished writing an email to Boulder Cafe. The text of my email should suffice as my review:

--

Hello,

Whether a dining experience has been phenomenal or abysmal, I've never contacted a restaurant to relay my thoughts--until now.

I just finished lunch at The Boulder Cafe with my fiancee and her family. Unfortunately, after living in Boulder for three years and being loyal customers since our first happy hour there, I have to say that we will never return.

Let me get what I thought would have been the most egregious aspect out of the way: my fiancee's fish and chips had a bug cooked into the batter. Your manager did the right thing and comped our entire bill. But if that was the end of the story, I wouldn't be emailing you.

While chatting with the manager, I mentioned how our waiter reeked of beer when he greeted us (I decided to omit the part where he spilled water on me while banging his tray over the railing and then offered an apathetic apology).

When the waiter next entered the patio, he muttered under his breath, "Reek of beer, huh?". That was the last straw for us and we left shortly thereafter. As we're walking away, the waiter returned to the patio and belted, "Thanks a lot guys! Appreciate ya!"

Never in my life have I witnessed a waiter with such audacity, tackiness, and gall.

I worked various jobs in the food industry from 16-24. The most important lesson imparted was that good service always makes up for late or bad tasting food. It doesn't matter how long you wait for a table, how long your food takes, if a burger's cooked well-done when requested medium-rare, if it takes 10 minutes to get water (which it did)--a sincere, charming waiter/waitress that cares about your dining experience will ensure your return.

I don't have any desired outcome of this situation. But I thought that those in charge should hear the full story of why two of your most loyal patrons will never return.

Regards,

We're from out of town and thought this looked like a nice spot, we should have kept walking. Worst place I've been to in a very long time. It was terrible from the start. The hostess was very unfriendly, like she didn't even want us there. We were only given one menu to look at between three people. It took at least 10 minutes just to get a glass of water. Server was awful. Food was ok. We wanted to stick around and have at least a few drinks, but that was next to impossible. We did not feel welcome at all. Would not recommend to anyone.

I too,, used to really enjoy the Boulder Cafe - but have noticed that things have really gone downhill. The other night I was there with my family. I ordered and gin and tonic, and got the wrong drink TWICE - after giving up, (first a vodka and tonic, then a gin and club soda...). I got a shrimp entree that looked like an appetizer, the mini "skewers" had two shrimp each and the side was four onion rings. Taco Bell advertises more shrimp in a single taco. The service was insanely slow, and when we requested bread for a starter when ordering cocktails- it was never delivered. They need to get their act together.

Well, this is hard for me to say, since I used to drag everyone I knew to Boulder Cafe's happy hour, but sadly the restaurant has taken a sharp decline. :( The fondue is good, but the meat was undercooked last time I was there. The tapas platter was served with horseradish sauce instead of tsatsiki, and used to have a much better selection of finger foods. What happened? Service has been really, REALLY slow... and not as friendly as they once were. Hoping that the next chance I give it, some drastic improvements will have been made. Can't say much about the bar area, since I usually sit at a booth by the window, but one thing I can say from my experience at the bar is that the bartender is extremely slow, so expect to wait around 20 minutes during the happy hour just to order and receive your drink! Cheers!

The Boulder Cafe' used to be a favorite spot of ours for a happy hour. Usually making the trip just to have a nice glass of wine and some shrimp. We haven't been there in a couple of months. What happened?
The bartender had one speed.... SLOW (it was early/not busy). The bar went uncleaned for the entire 30 mins we were there, Yuck! Glasses chilling in the seafood cooler!? Is that a health code violation? The thick layer of dust on the bar pillar and visible grime elsewhere. Ick Then we overheard the manager saying something like "this is the Boulder Cafe not some dive bar" to a staff member. Sorry but its really starting to look divey to us.
Please close for a week, sand down and refinish the bar, do some serious cleaning, fire the ineffective management and get some friendly bartenders again!. Then we wont feel like we are risking our health by going to HH. Have worked in a lot of restaurants and if the front of the house looks like this what are we imagining the back of the house looks like? Please before its too late.
FYI Just to be sure we will give it another try, then off to find a new favorite.

What a bummer!
Generally I just stop in during happy hour for beer and oysters. I made the mistake of going in for lunch today. Had fish n chips (one of the daily specials) fish was not fresh, batter was chewy.
Ate at the bar. The bar tender barely said hi, too busy talking to a buddy, much less asked about the meal. Maybe he can't handle hearing the reviews first hand. Went online to email the restaurant about my experience, no web site. Really! It's almost 2010. Get with the times. Will not be back for happy hour. Scared of the oysters if they can't manage to serve fresh fish for the daily special.
Final say: Clear out and make way for someone who knows how to run a restaurant.

This used to be a great spot, but has gone downhill sharply over the past six months. Last time we were there, the service was surly, slow, and got our order wrong (I mean bringing the entirely WRONG entree) not just once, but twice. My wife was through eating by the time I got my food. Save your money and go to Brasserie 1010. The service there is great, the food much better, and prices about the same.

The food here is absolutely delicious! Have to try the shrimp enchilada benedict served for brunch. Yummy! Also enjoy the wings- never tasted a sauce quite like that before. Amazing. Have tried everything on the menu and have yet to be disappointed.
