10/13/2020 - TK
On Saturday Oct. 10th, my husband and I drove up to Silverton from Durango to experience the views of the Million Dollar Highway which was a beautiful drive. Once we arrived in Silverton, we stopped at the Brown Bear Cafe for late breakfast. It was a nice, comfy setting and started as a pleasant experience then went to hell in a handbasket!
I had the French Toast which had a nice flavor. My husband ordered the breakfast special which we were told had bacon, sausage and ham mixed in scrambled eggs. When he tasted the eggs, the sausage was NOT a typical breakfast pork sausage. It tasted more like the Italian sausage you get on pizza (which doesn't treat my husband well). We asked the waitress if it was Italian Sausage and she wasn't sure but would take it back and check.
We were seated next to the kitchen and we could hear a man (who was the Owner) raise his voice after some conversation with the waitress, "it is the SAME sausage we've used everyday..." and the waitress told him, well they did not like it and want it without the sausage. We heard him say we would have to pay for (2) Specials even though we sent back the first one. We did not have a problem with that. When the waitress went back to get my husband's 2nd plate (without sausage), a yelling match ensued between the waitress and Owner. The Owner wanted to confirm with the waitress that we were paying to (2) Specials. She argued we should not have to. WOW! It got SO LOUD that the tables on the other end of the restaurant by the front door heard everything that was going on.
We were so embarrassed! We wanted to just pay and leave but I was scared that the Owner would come chase us down. He was THAT MAD!
Well, the waitress quit and walked out. Sorry to say that the Owner never came out to talk to us and apologize for the scene that had just happened. People were staring at us and the other wait staff.
We got up to pay so we could get the heck out of there! I heard the ladies at the table next to us say, "I cannot believe they are paying for those (2) Specials and did not even get to eat". So $46 dollars later - we left after eating only my breakfast, drinking about a 6 oz glass of milk that cost $3.95, 2 cups of the worst coffee (in an earlier review someone said "crappy coffee' - agreed!) and a hungry husband.
Maybe the Owner was just having a bad morning - but according to a couple other shop owners down the street that I shared our experience with, they said - "No - he's just that happy every day. Pretty much a full time jerk". By the way, there was already a "HELP WANTED" sign in the window... that should have been a clue.
So Mr. Brown Bear Cafe Owner, I hope our horrible experience made you feel better that day.
