As has been our Saturday night custom of late, my wife and I ordered takeout dinner from The Goose in Darien. For most of the preceding 4 weeks, the order consists of a Goose Burger and a French Dip, but last week, it was Fish and Chips and Salmon. I'll admit I was a bit surprised when I picked up the meal as the check was more than I'd expected, nevertheless, I left a small tip (because restaurant workers are still hit hard by COVID) and came home.
Last night we ordered again. This time we had Lemon Dijon Salmon and Chicken Burrata. Altogether, that's $53 in food. With tax, I was expecting my dinner to be about $56 and change but when I got to the restaurant my check was $66.64. That seemed high, so I looked at the check: The restaurant had added an 18% gratuity to the check for "to go" service.
Seriously? An 18% service charge for someone who had to pack the food in a paper bag and leave it by the door?
I have worked in the foodservice industry and I am aware of situations where an 18% service charge has been added to a diner's check. Usually, that is because the party was larger than six or eight people and, in that case, there is a disclosure someplace on the menu that says parties over a certain size will have 18% added to their check. What annoys me about this instance is that their menu has no such disclosure. In fact, nowhere on their entire website does the restaurant mention that any order of any size will be subject to a mandatory 18% tip.
My wife mentioned to me that the $8 to $10 per week we've been paying in tips that we were not aware we were paying would be enough for an entire meal at The Goose, which would be a good thing - maybe they could comp us a dinner. But we had not already decided that we would never go back there again. So there you have it. Great food mediocre service and expect to be hit with 1m 18% surcharge just for being in their presence.
Thank you very much but we will dine elsewhere from now on.

Could not be more happy with my experience with The Goose! Service was great, food was amazing, and the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Would recommend to anyone in a heartbeat!
