I enjoy visiting dive bars, and The Brass Monkey in Marathon, FL has become a comfortable spot for me. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, with friendly bartenders like Pamela making the experience enjoyable.
11/02/2020 - Rick Reineke
It comes with a heavy heart that I have to write this review for the security of others, and to the dismay of the owner John, who had welcomed us into his establishment. He may or may not know what happens when he is not present. We have just recently come across this little neighborhood bar called the Plush Pony and within 15 minutes of being there things turned violent. I'm a tall guy and a drunk little guy named Mark started spewing threats while my Friend and I were trying to have a quiet time shooting pool. This is the second time that this has happened in this establishment, but this time it was taken to an entirely new level. As I tried to ignore the comments and ridicule he kept with his harassment. When I turned my back to him he lifted his pool stick in an action to hit me on the back of the head, when the older bartender Ally came over she told me that he would never do that. Of course no-one has ever been blind sided in a bar with a pool stick, correct? The action alone in law enforcement is called "intent"! When asked to leave me alone, he came six inches away from my face and denied ever doing the threat! It was then I noticed that he wasn't wearing a mask while shooting pool! I hate the masks, but I obey the rules, and these rules are posted on their door! She said that she would handle it. She went over to Mark and said that because he was a local that had been coming in there for 30 years that she would never kick him out! She said this right in front of us! I had been previously warned by Friends to not go there, and now I had the grim reality as to why they were warning me away! If you want violence, a local without a mask screaming in your face, a bartender who thinks the belligerent actions of a local, and drugs is a good thing, then this is the bar for you. If you want a peaceful hometown bar, that you are welcomed when you walk in the door, keeping everyone safe and healthy is a priority I would recommend PIT ROW just right around the corner. Great food, Great atmosphere, and you will feel safe and secure. Sorry to the Owner John, but that type of behavior, supported by the bar staff, and encouraged is not someplace that I wish to bring my Friends and Family.
