The food was exceptional, especially the bistec and mofongo. A great spot in the suburbs for authentic Puerto Rican cuisine, like pasteles and jibaritos.

best food in town

Very disappointed they got my surtido wrong. the tostones were not cooked thru couldn't finish them only ate around the edges. I had pork and white rice the rice was toasty, pegao which I'm not interested in at all. The red beans and pork were good. The jibarito was nothing to write home about. Overall very unhappy with the quality of food.

Love the food. The best is the pechuga rellena de camarones (shrimp stuffed chicken breast). W/ Tostones. Its make to perfection at the time of the order. Not frozen. Love it its my favorite. With a Piña colada, and a flan. The service it's great, lot of food, fair price$$$... I will definitely go back.

Delicia Tropical Café may be the best option for us suburbanites. Located in Elgin, this Puerto Rican restaurant offers what city-dwellers get in Humbolt Park: great food at low prices.
This little café may not seem like much to look at, but don’t let looks fool you. The service is friendly, the prices are reasonable, and the food is delicioso. The menu’s offerings were so affordable, I didn’t have to restrain myself when ordering.
Of course, I purchased both the yuca and plantain varieties of mofongo. They came with a flavorful broth and salad. To my yucca mofongo, I added some of their roasted, peppery pork served up on a banana leaf. Another great side that would make for an even greater breakfast was their half-moon empanadas. Their jibarito’s weren’t bad either. II have to say, when it comes to any fried plantains, it’s best to eat them right out of the fryer. I wouldn’t chance any take-out.
Delicia Tropical is open for lunch and dinner, but if you’re around for breakfast, I suggest ordering from their selection of coffee drinks. I can imagine a cheese empanada and café con leche would pair well together.

Don't let the looks of this location fool you. Inside the unassuming Delicia Tropical Café, you'll find the friendliest and most accommodating service with some of the best Puerto Rican food north of Old San Juan served with no frills but lots of great flavors. You no longer need to fly back to Old San Juan just to savor the wonderful tastes of Sofrito, now it’s just a short drive to Elgin, north of Route 20. If you’ve come west on the Elgin O’hare Expressway, continue onto Lake Street (Route 20), then take the Villa Street exit.
Owner, Kevin Echevarria, has just updated their new menu with a number of vegetarian selections that highlight many of the most popular Puerto Rican dishes such as the traditional Mofongo (mash and fried plantains), Arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas), and even a Mofongo de Yuca (Mofongo with Yucca root).
Cuban sandwiches are a popular lunch take-out item along with their own style of Jibarito, a Chicago Style Jibarito pictured above, and even a Veggie Jibarito. The Chicago Style Jibarito is a tasty Puerto Rican sandwich with tostones cut lengthwise (fried green plantains) as the top and bottom of the sandwich in lieu of the usual bread. Add to that your choice of meat, combined with lettuce, tomatoes, mayo, and a slice of melted American cheese in between. The seasoned steak is by the way, muy excellente!
A very popular new item on the menu that even sounds wonderful, especially if you love seafood, is Pescado en Escabeche (marinated lightly fried Kingfish). So if you don’t know the difference between a plantain and a banana, but you’re always looking for great island flavors, this is the place to whet your appetite all with very affordable prices. Discounted gift certificates can be found for Delicia Tropical Café on Restaurant.com.

I was at this restaurant on Saturday.I order Mofongo with fried meat and broth and Arroz con Gandules. The food was very good, the waitresses were very attentive. This is not a fancy restaurant but it is clean and friendly overall I had a good experience and I will return to eat there.

In the beginning the food in this restaurant was aw some but lately I'm not sure if is new cooks or what is actually going on but the food is either cold the stuffed potatoes are saggy full of grease. they fry the plantain in the same grease they do their meats you can taste it. He needs to take care of the small issues before it gets bigger and loose the business. Advise take a trip to Puerto Rico and taste the food outhere you need to spice it up you are giving our food a bad name. Find a better cook and waiter. That was just a piece of advise you are young. Go to the one in Dundee, IL the food is great and the service.

Not the Puerto Rican food I'm used to. Is something else but it's sure not Puerto Rican my 14year old can cook way better. I'm not exaggerating.
