When I'm on the road, I steer clear of fast food and hunt down a classic diner, and Mel's Cafe in Jefferson City did not disappoint! The chop steak and mashed potatoes were pure comfort on a plate, and the service was so friendly that it could give Minnesota Nice a run for its money!

We eat there every week! Food is fresh, tastes great and the service is best in town! They also have REAL mashed potatoes!!

Ordered two eggs with hamburger. Eggs over easy. They came out over hard. Burger was dry and rubber and the hasbrowns were OLD and clearly made hours before and heated up in a microwave. I told our waitress how terrible it was and was told by the owner they didn't want our business! Lol! That's some A+ customer service! They're going to run what once was a fantastic place started by Melvin, into the ground. The owners are terrible and that attitude has spread to the staff. Run away. Far away.

My waffle was so hard it turned into crumbs. The eggs weren't cooked over easy like I had asked. Owner didn't care. Asked me to leave. My mother in law was petrified. We won't ever go back.

Went to Mel's a couple of weeks ago and my husband and I both ordered their chicken fried steak meals.
What is going on here? The steaks were horrible...nothing like they once were!! My husband asked for
a replacement, hoping it would be better...that maybe these were left over from lunch and had just been
re-heated in the microwave...not so. The second one was just as bad as the first! And instead of rolls
as before, you are now given little biscuit like rolls. I asked for wheat rolls, and was told they no longer
make them. Poor food...poor service. Don't waste your time or money here...won't be back! Next time
we want a good chicken fried steak meal we will go to Oscar's. A little pricier, but worth every extra
cent.

We liked the idea of having breakfast at home on Sundays without having to cook. Mels' has a large breakfast menu that looked great and the prices were reasonable, so we decided to order from them. I ordered hashbrowns with diced ham and onions added. My husband ordered bacon, eggs over easy and some hashbrowns.
When we got back home and sat down to eat, we opened our take-out containers and we were so disappointed. It was burnt. Everything was ruined. All of it. I don't mean just a little darker brown than I would like...I mean BURNT to the point of being black and leaving crumbling bits of ash in the styrofoam container. My husband's eggs were way overcooked and covered with bits of burnt hashbrowns. The bacon was black and smelled like burning tires.
I can't understand why any cook would serve that to a customer. Seriously, there's no way they could have sent that out without noticing that it was totally and completely ruined. I would have gladly waited for them to remake it if they had just simple said, "Hey, we burned your order, we're remaking it right now." I called the restaurant and told them what our food looked like and they said they would remake it. That meant we had to go back and wait another 30 minutes. We didn't live far away, but the whole idea of getting take-out was CONVENIENCE. This was not convenient.
So, we went back to the restaurant and brought the burnt food and showed it to the manager. Did we get an apology or a partial refund or anything? No. We waited for our order to be remade and went ahead and just ate it in the restaurant since we had already been sitting there for 20 minutes.
The staff avoided waiting on us and acted like they were pissed off and offended that we had the nerve to refuse to eat their burnt food. The food was drowning in grease and had no flavor. They use a lot of frozen food and low-quality "food service" products. I've eaten my share of bland, processed cafeteria food, but this was worse. I almost refused to eat it and thought about asking for a refund, but decided to just eat it and leave as quickly as possible.
I can overlook a singular bad food experience as long as it's handled well. This was not. We made 2 trips and spent more than an hour trying to get a good breakfast. The burnt food, low quality products and horrific customer service has made Mel's a one-time experience for us. We'll never go back there.

go to mel's if you love crappy food & bad service. they are so slow & forget obvious stuff like butter & syrup for pancakes. your food will be cold by the time they come back so you can ask for it & then go get it for you. sugar creamer jam syrup & butter should be sitting on the tables for breakfast service. what are these people doing? just so stupid. it seems like a lot of sr citizens go there & just sit & talk & drink coffee. don't be fooled by the full parking lot because it's all just old folks who don't want to go back to their retirement home after church.

My wife and I moved to Jeff city back in October, we enjoy eating out for breakfast usually on a Sunday morning. We set out looking for a new place to do just that shortly after moving here. We happened to drive by Mel's and the parking lot was full. That generally means the food is good and the service is better. We thought up until today we had found our spot, we have gone there several times since October sometimes once a week others only a couple 3 times a month. This morning we ordered our breakfast and I wanted to try the pie, I like Tripp,e berry pie so I ordered the berry blast. After my meal our waitress brought out my pie and I tried it but it tasted different than what I was used to from other berry pies. I thought that maybe they had used rhubarb instead of strawberries, as I cut into the pie again a piece of the crust fell off and under the crust was nothing but mold, fuzzy hairy mold. It was all I could do to keep from getting sick right there. When we pointed it out our waitress she was so embarrassed and apologized, she removed the pie from our tab by instructions of the manager but e manager never came and spoke with us over the situation, I guess he didn't care was maybe was just another situation he didn't to deal with again. Mel's had good food and good service but that pie had to be more than a week old or two for there to be that much mold on it I can't but think how much more food is coming out of that kitchen that is several days old and nearly spoiled. I'm sorry Mel but I'm just not going to be able to trust that you would serve me good quality food from that kitchen. Unfortunately I won't be able to return again.

Took my son to Mel's on June 2nd for his birthday breakfast and oh my was we treated with disrespect by the staff. We were set 2 tables from cash register, person who sat us got our drinks after 5 minutes of waiting for a waiter or waitress. After 4 tables was set after arrival 2 of which had their orders put in we had enough. 5 staff members standing at cash register at 1 time talking while we sat there within 8 feet and they would not wait on us. What the hell is going on with this place? I promise to spread this experience to my family and friends as well as anyone else that I can communicate this type of service too. Its poor service, disrespectful and I assure you some normal patrons had better think twice about supporting your business.
