02/14/2009 - Mediocre and Over-Priced
I had been to Porto Leggero about six months ago and had some cocktails and appetizers. It wasn't bad, so I decided to go back for Valentine's Day with my wife. They were sure to take my credit card and tell me that there was going to be 48 h cancellation policy, but they completely failed to tell me that they were going to have prix fixe menu. After sitting down, I realized that prix fixe was $65 per person. Fine. The waiter never introduced the menu and never told us for example that dessert was included. As he asked whether we wanted to have dessert, I initially said no because we were full enough, but then I heard from the table next to us that dessert was included. When I inquired about it, the waiter said, "Sure..." and nothing else. Since I had paid for the check, we just decided to take the dessert to go. Completely inadequate service. The food was mediocre at best--completely average. My chicken was a bit dry and the couple next to us sent their filet mignon back. Now, the bill for two: $209. $130 plus, $27 for three drinks, plus tax, and mandatory 20% tip. For about the same price, we had the most memorable dining experience at Fleur de Sel (http://www.fleurdeselnyc.com) in NYC. I definitely don't recommend Porto Leggero for fine dining. There are plenty of better restaurants in JC.

The food rivals some of the best Italian fare I've had in Rome, Florence or some of the better New York restaurants (e.g., Felidia). The decor is unexpectedly sophisticated and well done for a Jersey City restaurant--especially if you consider its location in a fairly new building. The soaring ceilings and exposed brick walls give it a romantic aura and elegant feel.
While the service is not quite on par with the food and atmosphere, it is nonetheless friendly and well intentioned. I simply think that Jersey City doesn't have the talent pool that Manhattan does.
This is arguably the best restaurant in Jersey City thus far.
P.S. Be careful if you park on the street. While it seems that there is street parking (based on other cars being parked there), you may find an unpleasant surprise on your windshield at the end of your meal.

This restaurant is excellent. The food is superb as well as the service and atmosphere. Don't miss out you won't be sorry. I think it is the best place in Jersey City.
