03/22/2010 - Disappointed from Sherman Oaks
Let's see. Their website is FALSE. The picture of the dining area is completely FALSE. The dining area is barely 1/8 of the room shown. The manager that sat us said that they were in the transition of going from lunch to dinner but if we wanted something from the dinner menu- we might have to wait 30 minutes or so. Just let our waitress know. We were fine with that and informed the waitress that we would like to see the dinner menu per the manager's suggestion.
The waitress-Sarah-immediately copped an attitude and asked what specifically we were wanting. I replied the chicken & dumplings. "Oh, I don't think that will be ready for quite some time. Let me check". Didn't ask if we wanted something to drink. Not even water. She came back and with clear annoyance said "The kitchen said that would be ready for another 2 - 3 hours". Um...if you dinner menu STARTS at 4pm why is an item not going to be ready for 2 hours past that?
Sarah then informed us to review the brunch menu. Honey- the last time I checked "brunch" was somehwere between breakfast and lunch. Hence the combo if the two words. 3pm - 4pm is NOT brunch. We did find something on the brunch menu. We sat at the table for nearly 15 - 20 minutes before we were asked if we wanted something to drink. Brought out cornbread but not even a glass of water.
The food finally came out. My baked chicken while a tad dry was good. The two wings on the side of the chicken breast were NOT fully cooked. They looked sickly. The mac & cheese was really good. The dressing w/ gravy had a consistency of cous cous!! Sounds odd but it did. Needed more gravy.
And as horrible as this may sound and I really hate to mention it. But this was clear from the moment we walked in. Being two white men was seemingly something no on had seen in there before. The patrons stared- HARD. Sarah did NOT like us from the get go. She took 15 - 20 minutes to get our drinks and the place was far from busy. While we were there- a man & woman of color came in and the first thing she asked them was what they wanted to drink. She was friendly and outgoing with them.
It is odd that this place was such a disappointing experience. The history and word of mouth had us looking forward to visiting. After what we went through- NEVER again. And trust me the word of mouth is out there that what once was is no more.

I came in for lunch and dinner, and the service at dinner was way better than the service at lunch. I did not see what kind of grade they had, but if it is an A, I would like to know how they got that grade. Both times I came in, the waitresses were making our plates, or cashing us out without the use of any gloves. I think that has to be a big flaw on any sanitation issue there could be. I noticed that the waitress that I had for lunch, had long hair, and her hair was not even put up, and that to me was also very unsanitary because had her hair gotten in my food, that would be another issue. In closing, I will say that the food was very tasty, and that I guess is there main focus in this restaraunt.
