On my recent visit, despite the bustling crowds, the friendly service at this local spot next to the hotel impressed me. The chicken and coleslaw were a perfect choice, but the canned baked beans left something to be desired. Overall, the food and drink quality earns an A+ in my book, especially with the upcoming upgrades to the establishment mentioned by our excellent server, Cassandra.

The service in this place is terrible. The food is great, but sometimes that is just not enough. When the swervice is bad its makes the whole dining experience terrible. The owner, Jodi, is an extremely rude lady that does not seem to care about the customers. I will not return and will pass along the word. Word of mouth is very powerful.

WOW! Does the Outpost Bar and Grill in Deer River, MN have new owners. We have been going there since they opened, but never have we received such rude service from the management as we did May 30, 2011.Remember this as you read on."The customer is not an inconvenience to your work, the customer is your work."
We sat in a booth for 5 min, while being ignored by the bartender (manager), who was washing dishes. I believe the one waitress was helping the new cook in the kitchen. To get the bartender's attention, we had to walk up to the bar and ask for service.
Upon placing our food order we were told the full rack of ribs was still frozen and so was the rib eye that was ordered as a substitute for the ribs. Now being a food manager at a small club, I understand things happen in the kitchen beyond the cook's control...like bad management. We place an order, but at no time does the owner(sitting at the end of the bar) nor the manager(bartender)address the situation or offer a word of apology for the inconvenience to there customer. The food was good enough, the waitress did her job and the new cook needed some guidance in the kitchen, but the owners and manager need to look for a new line of work, because they no nothing about customer service. After paying the bill and expressing our disappointment in the management/owner to the waitress, we begin to leave. At this point the bartender/manager came around the bar and asked us to leave his establishment. REALLY! Remember "THE CUSTOMER IS NOT AN INCONVENIENCE TO OUR WORK, THE CUSTOMER IS OUR WORK." We will return when they get competent management.

I have eaten there on many occasions and always had wonderful service and food. The inside decor is absolutely beautiful and the prices are reasonable for the amount of food you get.

I have been there a few times, we sat at the bar and had great service. I have had the prime rib, salads, and burgers. They were all very good. They have a DJ and ladies night on sat nights which was a blast. We always go there when we are up from the cities on hunting and fishing trips.

Went to the Outpost Bar & Grill in Deer River, MN Friday night. I’ve kinda wanted to go there since they opened. It’s a big log building and looks nice from the outside. Haven’t heard a lot about it, either good or bad. So finally the opportunity presented itself (Friday the 13th February).
Got there right about 6 PM. Maybe 15-20 people sitting at the tables, which were all bunched up to one side. Apparently, a band was supposed to play later, so they squished all the tables into one half the room. Another 4 or 5 people were sitting at the bar. One bartender and two waitresses appeared to be working. We sat down. Took nearly 10 minutes before a waitress appeared with menus and asked if we wanted drinks. She left after taking about half our drink order and none of our hors d’oeuvres orders. 15 minutes later she reappeared with the half drink order. and wanted to take our order, which we gave her, along with the rest of our drinks and our appetizers. 25 minutes later the dinner and appetizers and drinks showed up, missing about half the salads. After the rest of the meal showed up we saw the waitress one more time when she dropped off the bill.
I had a 1/2 lb burger. It was OK, but would have been better hot. I didn’t have soup or salad, but those that had the soup (potato-ham) took one taste and set it aside. My fries were cold. They don’t serve Coca-Cola, so I had a Dr. Pepper, which was very much watered.
The ambiance was OK, a bit noisy for my taste, although not as loud as Applebee’s. The interior is decorated in an outdoorsy style, with moose and deer and elk and walleye and muskie and pike mounts all over (don’t know if real or fake). The tables and chairs were made of actual varnished slabs of wood, no Formica here. The chairs were rather uncomfortable; the seat bottoms had been finished flat and there were no cushions. I suppose since it’s a bar they plan on the patrons getting numb enough not to care. The “outhouses” were labeled “Does” and “Bucks”.
If they served Coca-Cola it might have qualified as an OK bar, but they are a Pepsi house. We didn’t leave a tip, and I’m not planning on returning. A very disappointing evening.
