Delicious Chinese food at Republic Cafe in Portland. The Singapore Noodles and potstickers are a must-try. Carry out is convenient, but the dining area might need some light. Make sure to have your order confirmation handy when picking up. The menu has been the same for ages, with stiff drinks and friendly service. It's a classic spot full of character.

The fried shimp has always been a specialty. They were the best there is with a perfect batter. The last 2 times i have been to the Republic, they were not the same. I wish they would go back to the old recipe

Super shady, smells weird, and I got food poisoning from here. The Chinese Riblets tasted funny and ultimately have given me a foodborne illness I will have to be checked out by a doctor for. Would not recommend.

I showed up at 4 pm (opening time) and they let me in. I then sat for 10 minutes with three other patrons for take out and waited for the hostess to show up. She came in 10 min late and of course blamed the parking (really is that an excuse for downtown portland). The hostess proceeded to take may order and she was very snotty. (I guess we where taking up her time from her pre work ritual). Then when the order was taken and she went back into kitchen to deliver to the cook she came back out and I asked how long it would be and she again was very snotty saying "I do not know". To top it off when I did get my order and paid she threw the pin across the counter at me and it hit my dress. I thought nothing of it. When I got to my friends house with the food I noticed a big ink spot on my dress from where the hostess had thrown the pen at me. So I spent $60.00 dollars on food from a nasty hostess and she managed to ruin a $200.00 dress. Save your coin the food is not that good!

This place is not for the faint of heart. It's dark, it's in a shady part of town, and it smells weird. It is some of the best Chinese food I've had and the prices are good. Service is generally prompt and friendly. I suggest the Pineapple Duck.
