No sooner had we sat down than the waitress told us not too take too long. We had already waited upfront when no one was coming in. My friend and we're almost done (we had been seated from about 11:10 am until about 12:50 pm when the owner came over and told us I'm not telling you to leave but I want to turn over this table. No matter how politely he said it being rushed out is unpleasant.
Even though their pastrami is a bit grizzly (overall the food is okay) we've been eating there very several weeks for the last few months because it was a convenient place for us to meet halfway for business.
So unless you want to be hustled out I suggest you find another place. The waitress told us we could hang out at Starbucks next door. She must know that they are more pleasant someplace else.

I found the food and service incredible! Why would there be "confusion" over the bill? In terms of what? -because there is a death - lunch is free? Why would you sit Shiva in a public restaurant and not at the home of the deceased? Why would you sit Shiva without kosher food? Katz is Jewish but they have cheese and bacon - it is not Kosher. There is a lot more to your story than the owner ranting. You should be ashamed of yourself for even telling a fraction of an involved tale. Rivka Simons

I attended a graveside funeral in New Haven this morning. After the burial, the family and friends - about 30 of us - went to Katz's for a shiva brunch. Apparently there was some confusion about the bill, but instead of discussing this discretely with the family, the OWNER of this diner came out into the area where the family and friends were eating and started scolding and yelling at us and in particular the woman who had just buried her father a half hour earlier. He started yelling to all of us that we should eat whatever we wanted, he wasn't charging anything, and then we should get the hell out. I have never seen such inappropriate behavior. These people do not deserve your business.
