review_stars 08/02/2020 - SUSAN AND MIKE
We have been eating here for a LONG time, especially Mike, who has lived in Geneva and eaten at Best Friend's for about 25-30 years. But yesterday was quite the bad experience. We both ordered meatloaf. We have ordered it before, and it was DELICIOUS. But this time ... not so much. First off, the salad was about 1/2 inch of iceberg lettuce. One tomato wedge and one slice of cucumber. It looked like they had been stacked on top of each other, they were so flat. Now, I REALIZE that Covid shut down the AWESOME salad bar, but geez, something more than what was on that plate would be nice. Then, chicken noodle soup. It was good. Then, the meatloaf. NOT AT ALL as it used to be! It was literally a baseball sized ball of meat, covered in gravy. No onions, parsley, peppers, tomato paste, NOTHING but a hank of ground meat. Without the gravy, it was inedible. Same with the mashed potatoes. They were real, but if you tasted the center of them without the gravy, they tasted like nothing. Lacking salt, even. The vegetable was a succotash-like frozen medley without the Lima beans, like mom used to serve 40 years ago. Terrible. We asked for cole slaw in place of the succotash, but got both, and were charged for the slaw. Now, THAT used to be REALLY good, too! But it had no flavor at all. Seriously, it tasted like next to nothing. Well, I was starving, so I ate my meatloaf and potatoes, requiring extra gravy to do so; but Mike could not eat anything except the soup. We explained our disappointment to the server, who was sweet and very apologetic; she went in the kitchen and we could here her explaining exactly what we said to whomever; and one meal was taken off the bill. We were too sheepish to mention the cole slaw, which again, was supposed to be in lieu of the veggie, so we paid up and left. NOW, to be FAIR ... they had 'Help Wanted' signs on the door, and the food we ate used to be VERY good ... so maybe the Covid thing along with a lack of help has them at a disadvantage or something ... but for God's sake, they can easily and inexpensively try to restore the meatloaf meal back to it's former glory. And that would be awesome.
