I have been going to the coop for a long time. The food there is great! Very reasonably priced. I am extremely picky about how calimari is cooked. The calimari tacos are to die for! Good drinks too. You gotta try it!

Zubies Chicken Coop was a fancy French restaurant just off Pacific Coast Highway just barely in Newport Beach. An upscale restaurant with valet parking, velvet wallpaper, beveled French windows, and plush carpet. I don’t know why or how Zubie came to acquire it, but he did get rid of the valet parking and didn’t do much remodeling. He changed the menu, threw a inch or two of sawdust on the carpet and opened the doors. Not much has been done since, either; some new tables as those fancy French ones wore out and an occasional replenishment of the sawdust on the floor (If you scrape your foot through it you can still make out the design in the old carpet).
Known as a locals joint, the menu is diverse and the home-style food is served in large portions. The only thing I’ve been disappointed in was the rotisserie chicken (maybe that’s some kind of tribute to his pizza-less pizza place). It’s no surprise to see dressed down multi-millionaire yacht owners sitting at the bar for breakfast telling jokes with the local mechanics. Zubie (Captain John Zubieta) is gone now, he died a few years back after relocating to Las Vegas (left town years back due to some tax issues), but the place lives on; as does the great food at very reasonable prices. There’s even a weekly prime rib night!
