Archer's Tavern
Earlier this year I had a Facebook contest for people to name their favorite restaurant in the area. Archer's Tavern was the winner, and it wasn't even close!! I had a chance to sit down with owners Dan Apolito, Mike Fullenkamp, and Scott Dorsten a few weeks ago to find out why Archer's is so popular. The secret to their success isn't complicated. It's a philosophy of providing simple, American comfort food; hiring the best people; providing great service, and executing the business at a high level.
These owners (who all have children attending Centerville schools) push every employee to make a connection with guests. They have a team approach at Archer's. If your server is busy with another table, ANY server will step in and help you! Dan, Mike and Scott also empower their employees to solve problems. They don't always have to take it to a manager. Finally, at Archer's, trying a new menu item is a "no risk" proposition. If you don't like it, they replace it with something you do like"¦at no cost!!
Since their opening in June of 2010, Archer's has supported local businesses:
All beef is from Zink's Meats - www.zinksmeats.com
Crazy Uncle Jester's wing sauce from Jeff Stevenson (aka Crazy Uncle Jeff) www.crazyunclejester.com/hot-sauce
Buckeye Vodka from Jim Finke - www.buckeyevodka.com
Riegele Beer - which is locally imported by David Klass (and it is only served in Dayton and New York City!) - www.bizjournals.com/dayton/blog/morning_call/2013/08/beer-of-the-decade-to-make-american.html
Bread Pudding from Bill's Donuts - www.billsdonutshop.com
Special Events at Archers
Annual Chili Cook-off
Held every fall, this past year's event had 18 participants and over 100 guests. The winning recipe goes on Archer's menu for one year. Proceeds from the event goes toward a $1,000 scholarship to support Centerville High School's Culinary Program!
Craw-Fish Boil
Archer's celebrates their anniversary with this week-long event. Dan says this is the ONLY time he drinks while "on-duty;"
A Year of Beer
Every Wednesday at 5 p.m., Archer's taps a new, unique craft beer. The first 48 people that arrive get a brewery specific glass. This event has attracted a cult-like following!
Stone House Tavern in Waynesville
In September of 2012, Archer's opened this 2nd location. Dan's first response to this idea was to laugh out loud because Waynesville is dry. John Purdum had the only liquor license in the town, and offered to partner with the Archer's team in order to make Stone House Tavern a reality.
Owner Mike Fullenkamp was on-site every day to insure that the building was completed exactly as planned. The biggest challenge was establishing enough local connections to insure the standards at Archer's were maintained at this new location. After a few growing pains, they promoted a general manager from within the existing staff and it's worked out quite well!
Class"¦Integrity"¦Respect are common words to describe these 2 locations. One of the most telling pieces of evidence of this is when they decided to NOT offer their crowd-favorite pizza at Stone House Tavern. They did not want to unfairly compete with the local pizza establishments who do not have a liquor license.
Stay Tuned"¦ word has it that a 2nd location in Centerville is in the works! Let's hope so!!
