Bad food. I took the squash curry back because the squash was dark brown, mushy, and tasted like it was deep-fried in old oil. My replacement meal - the Spicy curry- was sub-par. There were about 6-8 pieces of tofu in it, the eggplant was overcooked, and the basil consisted of 2 pieces- 4 leaves each still on the stem.
Spring roll were not good either- over cooked and filled with iceberg lettuce.

Life long resident of Madison, and Vientiane is hands down the best Thai you'll find in town. Their curry squash dish is absolutely amazing and their pad thai, as cliche a dish it may be, cannot be beat. I'm a meat eater, but their tofu and the way they prepare it is a must try!
There are 3 restaurants in town, but the one on Park St., while superior in atmosphere, lacks in recipe for some reason. The Gorham and Regent locations are amazing. Don't expect much for service from the Gorham location, but rather the best Thai you'll find in Madison.

Best. Curry. Squash. Ever.

Great little Thai place! We tried the Tom Ka Kai Soup and the Pad Thai - both were delicious and plentiful! Great portion sizes, especially considering the price.
We had no problems with service - we were actually in a bit of a hurry and the waitress was very prompt with our meals and very attentive. We will definitely go back to try some of the other dishes!

I had the Wednesday special (tofu with pea pods, baby corn, carrot, water chestnuts, & mushrooms) and ordered it hot. It was very spicy but that's what I ordered. The food is excellent. The server brought out each meal separately but we were all served about the same time. The service was friendly and the portions generous. Perhaps they've worked the kinks out and corrected any problems previously noted but the place was clean for my visit. It's a little expensive for lunch but my meal was under $7.00. I'll visit again.

oops. Forgot to add that I went to their new location at 1441 Regent Street.

The Pad Lao is AMAZING. Everything I have tried here has been great but that is by far the best.

Good food, get it spicy! People who complain about the service make it sound like it's horrible or something; "distant" is more like it. You will get your service on time, it's just not going to be with a smile. They have a waitress that's friendlier than the owner now, though, and she's pretty decent. Just don't be deceived into thinking the workers there are angry or anything, because they're not. They just don't want to be your friends.
Worth a trip for sure.

Today I was let down by one if my favorite restaurants, vientiane . There food was amazing as always, but all throughout my meal I tasted and smelled something strange and musky. Ittiok me until the end of my meal to figure it out; the dishes and silverware had been washed with an old moldy sponge. It was disgusting and has soured me on this, my favorite Thai place. I will most likely go back, but if my dishes smell like mold, I am leaving without ordering.

Amazing food. The place is known not only for it's tasty plates but also for it's terrible service. So much so that it has become part of the odd "charm" that brings you back every time.
