Great
11/11/2014 - M.P.
I am a Wilmington local, so it is with great disappointment that I post my review and share the letter I sent to the owner regarding our last gift card purchase at the Brasserie du Soleil. My issue is not with their food but the practices related to that purchase that I personally find unsavory. Below is the letter written to the owners.......
To Whom It May Concern,
Enclosed you will find a money order for the $5.40 refund that we were issued due to the $35.40 hold that was placed on our bank card for the $30 gift card purchased at the Brasserie du Soleil on October 30, 2014. This whole situation is unfortunate and got much more complicated than it should have been. I think it could have been avoided if the additional 18% hold had been disclosed prior to showing up as a charge to our account. I believe that any consumer --would (and should) question charges or undisclosed holds to their accounts that they did not authorize.
As a business, you have a responsibility to inform your customers of holds, and train your management and/or staff in handling such instances in a professional manner, which does not include telling a customer that you are holding the additional 18% to make sure that we had money in our account to cover the charge. Why do I have to cover 18% more that the incurred charge? Professionalism also does not include questioning why we blacked out balances in accounts when statements were brought in to show the Brasserie's charge to our account.
As you suggested, I did check with our bank, and according to them, they did not adjust the amount as you stated. It is the restaurant (or its system) that sets the amount of the deduction. I know that this is not the first time that your store has dealt with issues over additional 18% gratuity to charges whether to gift card or cash tip left in lieu of charging tip to credit card. There are at least 2 other separate instances that I know of. If the code on your machine automatically adds the gratuity, you may want to see about correcting the issue to avoid future problems. It will remove questions to the integrity of your restaurant, such as whether the charge would have changed if we had not questioned it, and how many others have had charge issues that didn't get changed and just didn't notice.
As a hospitality business, it seems that customer service and respect would be a priority. We do not feel that either has been employed by your restaurant in this situation. We love the quality food and atmosphere of all of the restaurants in your group. They are usually the "go to" restaurants for us, especially when we have guests or visitors in town. Unfortunately, as a result of the handling of this situation, we can no longer patronize your businesses and will not recommend your restaurants to others in the future. Fortunately, we do have many other restaurants in the Wilmington area to turn to.
As you can see, we requested the gift card back from the person that we purchased it for after explaining the situation and are returning the card to you since it is of no use to us. This is no longer about money, it is about what is right and good business practice.

The food is reasonably good. However, my receipt from this place said one amount, but when I went to balance my checking account, I found that they charged my card significantly more than what this receipt said.

Poor Service! I should have spoken to the manager about our service, which was less than acceptable.
